AGNES

This would be my first oil painting in over 30 years and I have chosen a subject that has been on my mind for as long.
The Agnes. C was commissioned by my grandfather, Frank Castleton in the 1950's and built by local boat builders, Worfolk Bros. The 'Aggie', named after my grandmother, was originally built with the wheelhouse forward of the main mast. In the mid 60's an 'echo sounder was fitted (quite high tec for a Lynn smack) although I don't remember it ever being better that the instinct of experienced fishermen when looking for shrimp.
I discovered the photograph in my aunt Elaine's photo album and whilst I'm not sure of the identity of the figure closest to the camera I am sure that the other is my late father 'Tut' Castleton.
I have never seen an oil painting of a Lynn smack at work on the cockle beds of the Wash (that's not to say there aren't any) and with so many of today's cockle boats 'dredging' this scene may soon become a historical reference, although I did hear a while back that some old hands were reverting back to the old ways.
I'm pretty sure the location was 'thief' sand looking to the west towards the Cambs/Lincs coast.
The painting measures 56x38cm oil on canvas board.

Flypast

This latest graphite work titled 'Flypast' has been on the drawing board for almost a month and became one of those 'why did I ever start this' marathons. To be fair, I have only been picking at it between canvassing and leaflet dropping for a local election so it hasn't been a month of drawing....all the same, it's a bit over the top for just a couple of Pelicans and measures 42x43 cm.

My latest graphite effort features a giraffe family portrait (my second). At 54 x 35cm this is much bigger than the last but executed in exactly the same way with Wolffe graphite pencils on Fabriano 5 hot press watercolour paper.

West Norfolk Artists Association Exhibition 2012

The 11th WNAA 2012 summer exhibition has just ended and can be counted a success with well over 1000 visitors to the 2 week event at St Nicholas Chapel, King's Lynn.

The 'fishermans' chapel provides a stunning backdrop to the annual exhibition as always and with plans afoot to carry out extensive renovations which will include alterations that will create an even more dynamic exhibition area it can only get better. It is worth pointing out here that much of the restoration does depend on fund raising so every effort will be appreciated and with what promises to be an unrivalled exhibition space, much to the Associations benefit.
